Jeff said… Hello Charlotte! In reference to your inquiry of the "Victor Baby Food" Silhouette Trade Card, this type of advertising in America was popular in newspapers and broadsides and goes back to the days of the American Revolution, though it reached the height of it's popularity 100 years later during America's Centenial in 1876 and shortly afterwards. I read once that the viewer of a silohuette sees an outline of a shadow, then subconciously imagines what the subject would really look like in the light, thus no two viewers would see the same subject as our individual imaginations must differ. Maybe the use of silohuettes was an early for of "Subliminal Messaging".
