Bill McBride replied to Judy Zent's discussion How to pick, and ship, ads in the group Advertising Ephemera
"We've been selling ads since 1975 and have cut perhaps 100,000 magazines over the years. The obvious starters are transportation of all kinds [anything that moves people from one place to another from a canoe to an ocean liner, a pedal car to a…"

New to site - lots of questions.

Where do I find market prices for my items; then where do I advertise items for sale?

How to pick, and ship, ads

We have so many old magazines from the 10s through the 50s or so. Wonderful ads, B&W and color. How do I pick out the ones to advertise, and then what is the best way to ship them to the buyer?

"Another thought (since you are so willing to help). Ads from old magazines - do they sell, are they worth more than the magazine intact (i.e. WWII Life magazines)?"

"Read recently that greeting cards should be taken out of their envelopes. The envelope is the good part though. It shows the date, recipient, etc. What do you think? Thanks."

Some purists will say that it’s sacrilege to destroy a mag thus - but someone’s going to. On a personal note I decided that it might as well be me cos space is ultimately a problem for most collectors. On a personal note I do keep one of each mag title and those with special events (and, - rather subjectively, articles that interest me!). I think you will find that special events and certain special covers have a premium value (Royal events and even Christmas numbers).

Thank you for thinking of me. Any potential buyer will need to know what they are getting and you will need to have some idea of what $ you expect so everyone comes out happy. If you take the collection to a local auction (in the UK ephemera is usually put with books in specialist auctions) you will get a quick sale with little work on your part but is unlikely you will get as much. If you place on eBay as one large lot the same applies. Sorting into categories or themes even if broad may help sell. $ will depend on condition and age. Have a look around eBay and at other sites of dealers on TEN. If items are family related don’t forget that once sold they are gone forever. If I can help further please let me know - happy to let you have my e-mail.

I think, Judy, that these banks were or are literally for mechants. The 2 I can think of off the top of my head is Barings (which you may have heard of) and Rothschilds (whom you will certainly have heard of). So I get the feel that they tend to be exclusive. Perhaps they are a European thing!? 'fraid I've not heard of Monkey Ward.

Hi Judy, I have picked up the odd cheque in the past. I have gone for the elaborate security printing and I have found it particularly interesting if the bank is no more. At one time in my past career (early 80s) I ran the unpaid cheques section of HM Customs - some of the cheques I saw from lesser known banks (esp Merchant banks) were particularly peachy. How I wish I could have got my hands on them!!

Judy Welcome to the Ephemera network.

If you list your items on any good selling site--The Buyers Will be There. You can also try Etsy.

Hi Judy, there are lots of places to sell online. You can set up your own store, use online venues like eBay, TIAS, Collectors' Quest, Bonzale, etc. -- there are a number of dealers here who can recommend & give opinions on sites they use. And I believe some sellers here trade/swap with one another too.

Good luck!

PS If you don't have a blog or website, upload some items here so we can all see what you do collect!
