[Prohibition] Group of Twenty-Six Medicinal Liquor Prescriptions, 1923-1924.

[Prohibition] Group of Twenty-Six Medicinal Liquor Prescriptions, 1923-1924.

Twenty-four are written on partially printed government issued "Treasury Department/U. S. Internal Revenue/Prescription Blank-National Prohibition Act" forms measuring 6.75" x 4.5". The remaining two are handwritten on private prescription sheets measuring 3.5" x 5" and 5.5" x 3.5". All are issued for "Spiritus Frumenti" (whiskey) with the exception of two: one prescribes "Brandy" and the other "Vinum Gallici" (French wine). These forms were used to prescribe liquor at a time when alcohol was considered to be as dangerous as opium or any other "hard" drug and was banned by the passage of the Eighteenth Amendment in 1919 and its enforcement beginning in January, 1920. It was repealed thirteen years later (1933) by the Twenty-First Amendment. All are in fine condition. Estimate: $200 – $300. Included in Heritage Auctions’ Historical Manuscripts Auction #6080, April 11, 2012, in New York.
