2004 Republican National Convention-related ephemera (Binder 1)

For several days leading up to and including the four days of the 2004 Republican National Convention in New York City, I gathered all the paper materials I could get my hands on which had anything to do with it. My archive numbers a little over 500 pieces. Most are anti-RNC materials, and kept in four binders.

Learning that the nomination of George W. Bush for president at the convention was going to draw the most protests since those of the Vietnam War in the 1960s and ‘70s, I felt it would be both a fun and important way to document the way hundreds of groups were about to engage in a couple of basic constitutional rights of the American people in this country - to assemble and to protest.

Both through the news media and anti-War organization websites I sought out marches, rallies, performances, demonstrations, group headquarters and more. I also participated in the main march on August 29, 2004 where over a half a million people of all ages strolled past Madison Square Garden, the site of the convention. Today it is considered one of the largest protests in U.S. history.

With two cheap Instamatic Kodak cameras I also took a few dozen photos of the activity around the Garden and the march on August 29th. Some are included in this scrapbook.
